My brushes act as conduits between perception and expression. The effect of each brushstroke informs the next brushstroke until the painting tells me to stop. These "conversations" are rarely so simple as this. It's more like a panel discussion among observation and imagination, intuition and intellect, emotion and discipline, curiosity and discovery.

I like to think of my palette as including both intention and accident. Accidentals lead to discovery, originality, and renewed curiosity. This requires trust, which is perhaps the most essential--and challenging--element in producing meaningful work. Capturing a gesture that was unanticipated is a rewarding, driving force.

Attention to a particular characteristic of subject matter serves as a point of departure toward an intimated but unmapped destination. For example, an incidental reflection or shadow may insist on becoming central to the content.

I strive to travel the canvas with painterly gestures, layered colors, and enough ambiguity for the viewer to form a personally unique interpretation.
